Battlezone Arcade Game

1980 - Battlezone was the first coin-op to offer an almost fully immersed first person vector graphic gaming world.      In fact, so realistic was this game that is got the attention of the US Army who hired Atari to redesign the game using simulated controls from a Bradley Fighting Vehicle and modified the software with trajectory and other more real world combat settings for training purposes.   This was the first truly first-person Virtual Reality game!  Yet another first for Atari.

In addition, a special exercise cycle version of Battlezone was created within Corporate Research Engineering by Tim McGuinness in 1982.

Another interesting product was this articulated robotic arm, connected via the 850 parallel interface.  Driven by RC servo actuators, it was able to rotate at 5 points.  Though is was not powerful enough to actually lift much mass, it was ideally suited for learning numerical control and robotics.  It was one of the amazing projects to come out of Research Engineering's model shop.  It was eventually manufactured for a brief period by a separate company in Arizona.
One of the most innovative projects was the creation of a LaserDisc based interactive point of purchase kiosk that was interfaced to an Atari 1200XL.  At its heart was a monstrous Pioneer 1st generation VP1000 flat-bed top-loading LaserDisc player.  At right are the two versions of the ERIC LaserDiscs from my collection. The work that was done on the ERIC concept was later ported to the creation of the FireFox (after the movie of the same name) LaserDisc based coin-op arcade game.

VisiCalc 1.76
VisiCalc 1.76 - © 1981 Software Arts, Inc.
Short for "visible calculator," VisiCalc revolutionized computing by introducing the first spreadsheet program. It was the first to have @ functions, title rows/ columns, split "windows," and the "/" menu system. It packs a lot of power into a 27K program. To see all the features of this app, read this.

This version was released on one 160K floppy.
